Baker Football Picked to Three-Peat

OLATHE, Kansas – Two-time defending Heart of America Athletic Conference Southern Division champion Baker University was picked to three-peat, as the 2017 Heart Football Coaches’ Preseason poll was released on Monday at the 2017 Heart Football Media Day at the Embassy Suites.

Baker received five of six first place votes for a maximum 50 points as the Wildcats went unbeaten at 5-0 in the South Division for the second-straight season. Baker has won 17-straight games against a Heart opponent and went 14-1 last season, a school-record for victories and played in its second-ever NAIA-FCS National Championship game on December 17, 2016 in Daytona Beach, Florida. The Wildcats also played for the national title in 1986. They won the Heart South Championship in 2015 and 2016.

Missouri Valley tallied the final first place vote and was picked second with 46 points, while MidAmerica Nazarene earned 42 points to get picked third. Evangel edged Central Methodist by two points for fourth place in the poll, with Avila rounding out the South division table.

For the second-straight preseason, Grand View received five of six first place votes and earned the maximum of 50 points (teams do not vote for themselves). North Division co-champion William Penn claimed the remaining first place tally and was picked to finish second with 45 points after posting a 4-1 mark in division play for the second-straight season.

Benedictine tallied 43 voting points to get picked in third place, while Peru State, Graceland and Culver-Stockton rounded out the divisional prediction.
