No. 2 Baker Stays Perfect Against Avila

 

BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – The No. 2 ranked Baker University football team kept its perfect record in tact against Avila on Saturday, as the Wildcats defeated the Eagles, 57-17, to move to 8-0 on the year.

 

The Wildcats are now 16-0 all-time against Avila and improves to 2-0 in Heart South Division play. Since the inception of the Heart Southern and Northern Divisions in 2015, Baker is 12-0. The ‘Cats have now won 25-straight games against a Heart opponent.

 

Baker scored the first three touchdowns of the game, all in the first quarter, as running back JD Woods ran TD’s in from 5 and 1 yards and Nate McLaurin scored his first of two pick-six’s. He took his first pick six 24-yards for a TD, then ran one in from 67-yards in the third quarter.

 

Baker led 21-10 at halftime after a Landen Nealy 30-yard field goal and a Spenser Lewis 5-yard TD run.

 

Woods then ran his third and fourth TD’s in from 3 and 31 yards to give Baker the 35-10 lead right after halftime.

 

Trenton Thornton scored on a 9-yard run to bring the score to 42-17, before Woods scored his 5th rushing TD with 11:39 remaining and Ronald Allen scored a 1-yard TD with 4:44 to go in the game to give Baker the final score of 55-17.

 

Woods had a career day rushing, as he ran 23 times for 186 yards and a career-high five touchdowns.

 

Logan Brettell led Baker with his 13-of-20 day for 166 yards passing and he ran for 34 yards.

 

Baker accumulated 590 total yards of offense while allowing just 235. Avila ran for 39 yards and passed for 196.

 

Nate McLaurin also had a big day for the Baker defense with four tackles and two interceptions for touchdowns.

 

Clarence Clark was a perfect 7-of-7 on PAT’s and he led the receiving corps with six catches for 83 yards. Nick Snider had five catches for 64 yards.

 

Josh Kock tied for the team lead for Baker with nine total tackles, tying teammate Kegan Schumann. Indie Allen and Jake Zieler each had a sack apiece.

 

The Wildcats return home on Saturday, October 28 for Senior Day, as they face Central Methodist at 1 p.m. inside Liston Stadium.
