No. 2 Baker Punches Ticket to Heart Title Match
BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – For the fourth time in the past five seasons, the No. 2 seeded Baker University men’s soccer team will play in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Tournament Championship match, as they defeated No. 3 seeded Central Methodist, 1-0, in the semifinal round on Tuesday night inside Liston Stadium.
They will now travel to No. 1 seeded Missouri Valley in a rematch of the 2015 Heart Championship final and a rematch of the finale of the 2017 regular season, with Missouri Valley winning both of those matches.
Mo Val defeated No. 5 seeded MNU on Tuesday night in the other semifinal, 3-2. The Wildcats improve to 15-3-2 after the win over CMU, while the Eagles fall to 13-3-3.
The Eagles outshot Baker ,17-4, with seven shots on goal for CMU, as 2017 Heart Freshman of the Year, Alberto Ciroi earned the shut out with seven saves. This marks the ‘Cats ninth shut out of the year.
Baker attempted two shots on goal, with the lone goal coming from Heart First Team All-Conference award winner Blake Levine in the 33rd minute, as the assist went to Third Team All-Conference honoree Joseph Houlihan.
Houlihan, Jordan Gomez-Nix, Levine and Brandon Milburn all attempted a shot each for Baker.
Guzman Pery led CMU in shots with four and seven different Eagles attempted a shot on goal, but none were able to slip past Ciroi.
Baker and Missouri Valley will kickoff at 7 p.m. this Friday, November 10 in the Heart title match in Marshall, Missouri.
