Men’s Basketball Continues Winning Streak with Win over Avila
BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – The Baker University men’s basketball team kept its winning streak alive on Wednesday night, as they defeated Avila University, 85-65, to move to a perfect 6-0 on the season and opened Heart of America Athletic Conference play with a win.
Avila falls to 6-2 overall and 0-1, as they too played in its Heart opener on Wednesday night.
This marks the Wildcats’ best start since 2006-07 when they began that season, 5-0, under former head coach Rick Weaver.
Baker shot 35-of-65 from the field, good for 53.8-percent and went 7-of-12 from three-point range on 7-of-12.
They were also nearly perfect from the free-throw line on 8-of-9 shooting and threw down six dunks.
The Wildcats were also all over the boards, outrebounding the Eagles, 37-22, and recorded an assist on 17 of their 35 field goals.
The Baker defense forced 13 turnovers and held the Eagles to just 39.7-percent from the field.
Nathan Guscott led the team in scoring with 18 points and Brett Elifritz added 17, Vandy Hopson scored 14 and Stephen Edwards scored 13.
Tyree Peter led the ‘Cats in rebounding with eight on the night and Guscott supplied the squad with six, he also led the team in assists with six.
11 different Wildcats scored on the night and they grabbed 12 offensive rebounds, with five from Peter.
The ‘Cats will next hit the road on Saturday to face Culver-Stockton at 4 p.m. in Canton, Missouri.
