Baker Football Ends 2017 Ranked No. 9

BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – After capturing its fourth Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship in the last five seasons and third-straight, the Baker University football team officially ends the 2017 season ranked No. 9 in the NAIA Football Coaches’ Postseason Poll, announced on Tuesday.

The ‘Cats appeared in its fifth NAIA Football Championship appearance in the last six seasons in 2017 and went 10-2 overall and 4-1 in the Heart South.

Freshman running back JD Woods was named the 2017 Heart South Offensive Player of the Year and for the third-straight season, senior defensive lineman Josh Kock was named the Heart South Co-Defensive Player of the Year and earned a spot on the 2017 NAIA-AFCA First Team All-America.

Baker earned 18 Heart South All-Conference award winners and five Wildcats were selected Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes.

Of those 18 All-Conference award winners, nine will return for Baker in 2018 including First Team All-Conference linebacker Indie Allen, First Team All-Conference linebacker Kegan Schumann, First Team defensive back Nate McLaurin and First Team All-Conference safety Grant Elston.

Daniel Ofa returns for his junior season, he too was named a First Team All-Conference selection at offensive line. Also returning on offense is freshman wide receiver Nick Snider and Cornell Brown will be back for his final season. Brown was a 2015 AFCA-NAIA All-American.

Also ranked in the Top 25 from the Heart includes No. 11 Grand View, No. 12 Benedictine and No. 25 Evangel. Baker went 3-0 against all three of those opponents in 2017.
